Speakers Nov 19 AGM

Posted in Uncategorized on September 24, 2011 by friendsbmw

This year’s AGM & Get Together will be held November 19th 2011 at The Wellington Hotel Boscastle.

Speakers are:

Tabitha Cadbury Collecting Magic

Tabitha says ~ My talk will focus on one aspect of the Museum of Witchcraft’s collection, the everyday charms & amulets used by ordinary folk attempting to ‘accentuate the positive’ & ‘eliminate the negative’ in their lives. The objects in question include rubbing stones, moles’ feet, WWI soldiers’ amulets & Neapolitan glass charms. Using images of similar objects in museums all over England, I will point out how Cecil Williamson’s collection interconnects with these through the late C19th & early C20th folklore movement & through collectors such as the prominent London folklorist Edward Lovett. Who collected these powerful things, & how have their meanings changed over time?

Tabitha Cadbury is a museum curator & researcher. She studied anthropology & world arts & has worked for the British Museum, Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology, Royal Albert Museum in Exeter & the Scarborough Museums Trust. She is an active member of the Museum Ethnographers Group & currently a Curator of Human History at the Plymouth City Museum. She is planning a doctorate on charms & amulets collections.

Anniversary Book

Posted in Uncategorized on May 5, 2011 by friendsbmw

the book Museum of Witchcraft~A Magical History will be officially launched May 14th at the Guardians of Cornish Magic Day in Boscastle (fully booked) and is already selling well.

This is a limited edition (250) hardback signed by museum owner Graham King and is proving very popular – the images are very beautiful if I do say so myself. You can buy one through the museum or at www.theoccultartcompany.co.uk

Friends Weekend

Posted in Uncategorized on December 2, 2010 by friendsbmw

The Friends weekend will be going ahead as planned despite the weather conditions in some parts of the country. It’s disappointing some people have had to cancel but this is the only weekend we have available. Hopefully the snow will let up – it’s lovely here in Boscastle with a few icicles down around the harbour but no snow as yet.

Submission date passed

Posted in Uncategorized on October 3, 2010 by friendsbmw

Wow it’s been a fascinating experience reading everyone’s submissions for the 50th anniversary book and we’ve been inundated by some great material. The date for submissions has now passed and we are unable to take any more essays as we are already looking at a longer book than originally planned. Thank you to everyone who has sent pieces in – we now have the fun task of putting it all together with the other bits on museum history, special events and biographies. We’ve already put a lot together with amazing images from the museum. Will keep you up to date on the progress.

Friends will be there letting people know what our funds have been directed towards and we’ll be selling museum products which are only available in the museum or online at www.theoccultartcompany.co.uk which is the preferred online store for the museum. More details to follow when we have updated info.
